Queen's birthday holiday moved for CHOGM

Premier Colin Barnett has announced next year's Queen's birthday public holiday will be moved to coincide with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, when central Perth will be closed to traffic.

Mr Barnett said he would move the holiday from Monday October 3 to Friday October 28 for the first day of CHOGM to minimise the effect of a Central Business District lockdown on businesses.

CHOGM, which is expected to attract 4000 delegates including 50 Presidents and Prime Ministers to WA, will take place over three days from Friday, October 28.

"Friday being the main day will mean that much of the city area will be closed to traffic, not to the public but closed to traffic," Mr Barnett said.

"There'll be some very important security issues that need to be in place, and also there'll be a significant number of motorcades travelling through the city.

"To deal with that, and to allow the city to function normally, the State Government has made the decision to move the Queen's birthday holiday for next year."

Mr Barnett also said there was a strong chance of a royal visit during the meeting and a Friday holiday would allow the public to take part.

Federal member for Perth Stephen Smith said he was pleased with preparations for CHOGM so far and with the level of cooperation occurring between the state and federal governments.
