Protocol for business and social relationships in China

Chinese surnames always precede the given name.

p Refer to ‘China’ or the ‘People’s Republic of China’. Referring to the “Republic of China’ is a mistake and may cause confusion or offence, as this is what Taiwan is called.

p Be punctual and formal at meetings. The Chinese place considerable importance on personal and informal long-term relationships.

p When visiting a factory or school the locals may clap as you enter. The visitor should then clap in return.

p Back slapping or untoward boisterousness would not be appreciated. Chinese are reserved and polite in their relations with foreigners.

p Night-time functions aside, casual, relaxed dress is appropriate.
