Property plays

The property and construction industry has created many powerful and influential Western Australians, none more so than Multiplex founder John Roberts.

Recently in the press for standing down as executive chairman due to cost blowouts at Multiplex’s Wembley stadium project, Mr Roberts remains a director and major shareholder of the company, which is run by his son, Andrew Roberts.

Bill Wyllie’s Wyllie Group engages in a range of investment activities, including a significant stake in Multiplex, but the group’s major interests are in property, and include ownership of the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre.

Stan Perron’s Perron Group also has diversified investments, and holds commercial property assets, primarily shopping centres, valued at more than $1.2 billion, which generate over $80 million a year in rental income.

Dale Alcock is a 50 per cent owner in the nation’s second largest residential building company, the Alcock Brown-Neaves Group, which is expecting to turn over $600 million this year.

Twenty five years after founding the Satterley Property Group, Nigel Satterley owns Western Australia’s largest independent property operation, which turns over more than $300 million a year and also has the third largest land bank in Australia.

Warwick Hemsley oversaw the listing of WA-based Peet & Co in August last year.

Peet now has a market capital of about $300 million and is one of Australia’s largest residential land developers and syndicators.

State heads for national listed developers who are influential in Western Australia include Nick Perrignon (Stockland), Chris Lewis (Australand) and Adrian Fini (Mirvac Fini).
