John Langoulant has undergone a big change over the past year, moving from his role as under treasurer to become chief executive of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of WA.

This change has, in one sense, taken Mr Langoulant away from his central role in government policy making, but at it has also freed him to be an opinion leader and lobbyist.

Mr Langoulant is highly respected for his pragmatic advice to both the Gallop and Court governments and his intellectual legacy is likely to remain influential in the Department of Treasury and Finance.

He is also highly influential in the business community, leading debate on a wide range of policy issues.

Mr Langoulant’s main critic was former opposition leader Colin Barnett, who argued the CCI was captive of the big end of town.

Mr Langoulant insists the CCI acts in the interests of all businesses, large and small.
