CONSTRUCTION of the Jervoise Bay marine industrial project is expected to begin in October and the project could be operational by July 2002.
The jointly WA and Federal Government-funded project is aimed at helping WA win a greater share of the work in oil and gas, resources and marine industries.
The complex will allow local firms to compete more effectively for contracts to repair and manufacture large-scale equipment.
The project will incorporate a service wharf, refurbishment of the existing load-out facility and a fabrication and assembly hall.
There will also be a common user facility and provision of industrial land.
The WA Government is currently identifying companies to undertake the construction work.
Government agencies have already completed considerable preliminary work, including land development and a major realignment of Cockburn Road.
Plans include an associated technology park and marine industry training centre.
It has been estimated the Jervoise Bay development will directly create 1,600 jobs and indirectly create a further 3,200.
