Perth's oldest stockbroking firm, DJ Carmichael, is looking to beef up its corporate finance team as Ian Dorrington is appointed managing director and Brian Hockney as chairman.

The appointments come four months after former managing director Rod Beeton suddenly resigned from the firm.

Mr Dorrington told WA Business News that although he and Mr Hockney will have added responsibilities, their day-to-day activities will remain the same.

"I will be principally focused in doing what I've been doing for the past 19 years which is advising clients and Brian will still ... very much be the managing director of Carmichael Corporate [Finance]," Mr Dorrington said.

He added the changes come as DJ Carmichael looks to strengthen its relationship with London-headquartered parent company WH Ireland Group, which changed its management structure earlier this year.

Mr Dorrington said both companies were now focused on making the most out of the relationship.

"There are tremendous prospects there for both businesses in terms of capital raising opportunities, research sharing, revenue generation, cross-border share dealing," he said.

As a result, Mr Dorrington said Mr Hockney is looking to strengthen the corporate finance team as the firm looks to take advantage of its link with London and the capital market there that Australian resource companies can tap into.
