An eight-storey apartment block will be built on the Sorrento Plaza site after the state’s planning commission approved the $73 million project.

Developer Megara’s $73.7 million proposal to build 75 apartments in a development named Ora Sorrento was lodged via the state government’s State Development Assessment Unit pathway.

The Western Australian Planning Commission approved the project at its meeting yesterday.

Ora Sorrento will be built on a 5,780 square metre area bounded by West Coast Drive, Padbury Circle and Drakes Walk.

Other features of the development include a cafe, restaurant and liquor store.

Megara development manager Trent Durward said he expected a number of the existing tenancies to return.

“We look forward to delivering a quality architectural statement; new accommodation choices; and rejuvenation of the centre with recreational amenities and commercial activity that will integrate with the beachfront area,” he said.

“We are delighted that development can proceed on this important site as it can make a far greater contribution to the local community than is currently the case with its ageing buildings and infrastructure.”

The City of Joondalup was opposed to the development, recommending the WAPC refuse it.

However, some locals backed the project, including White Salt restaurant owners Tim and Claire Leech.

WAPC member Jane Bennett said the application brought an important role to the housing diversity in the area.

“It’s important to me that public views of the oceans are maintained for the public realm space,” she said.

Construction is expected to start next year.
