MAGIC Moments managing director Dominic Mulligan has welcomed an announcement by Sun Microsystems Inc. to acquire Cobalt Networks Inc. in a stock-for-stock merger.

Cobalt is a major supplier of server appliance products and is well known for easy to use and cost effective devices that function as engines for the delivery of network based services.

Sun, already a provider of low-end, mid-range and large-scale servers to the enterprise and service provider marketplaces, hopes to accelerate its entry into the growing server appliance marketplace and bolster its long-standing focus on network computing through the acquisition.

This will considerably expand Sun’s offerings for service providers.

Mr Mulligan, a True Blue Cobalt Partner, said Sun’s involvement with Cobalt would make the brand stronger.

Magic Moments recently launched Cobalt RaQs as part of its hosting portfolio.

“Sun’s acknowledged strength with Java will help make the Cobalt RaQs even better,” Mr Mulligan said.

“The strength of Cobalt’s RaQ products is that they enable web designers to act as their own web hosting company – without needing to know Linux, sendmail, apache or any other technical component traditionally associated with web hosting.”

Mr Mulligan said the acquisition was expected to be completed by December 31.
