THE Port of Fremantle will play a vital role in the fight against illegal fishing in Australian waters this weekend with the arrival of the South Tomi.
In a joint action by the Australian Fisheries Management Authority and the South African Navy, a vessel named the South Tomi was captured allegedly carrying illegally caught Patagonian Toothfish worth an estimated $1 million.
The vessel was chased into South Africa waters and has now been brought back to Australia.
Also known as ‘white gold’ because of its high market value, the Patagonian Toothfish can sell for as much as $US1,000 each.
The Antarctic and Southern Oceans Coalition, which represents conservation organisations in 50 countries, has called for a complete halt to fishing in the Antarctic and Southern Oceans.
According to estimates presented to the coalition, hundreds of millions of dollars worth of toothfish have been taken out of the Southern Ocean over the past five years.
The fish plays an important role in the Southern Ocean ecosystem.
