• FORMER City of Perth Deputy Lord Mayor Jim Leahy was nominated for council at an extraordinary election on 8 July held following the sudden death of councillor Noel Semmens.
Born and bred in East Perth, Jim Leahy spent more than twenty years as a City of Perth councillor.
In 1979 and 1995, Mr Leahy was Deputy Lord Mayor and, in his twenty years as on the council, served as chairman for the finance, town planning, health and building and general purpose committees.
He believes the East Perth Redevelopment Authority should hand back the East Perth area to the city and continue to upgrade the eastern gateway.
• COUNCIL has given approval to a new road coach wash facility and depot in Summers Street, East Perth adjacent to the East Perth railway terminals.
The development involves a service-wash bay and fuel point located in an existing open car park as well as a bus parking area located to the south of the open car park.
• COUNCIL has approved new Christmas decorations for Christmas 2000 at a cost of $126,839.
The decorations come with the aid of a $100,000 grant by the WA Government made in January.
They will be located on William Street between Wellington Street and St George’s Terrace and will replace the existing festoons and tinsel with decorative catenaries.
