Subiaco-based graphite player Kibaran Resources has achieved some preliminary success in developing a process to convert the carbon-based mineral into graphene.

The company has joined with 3D printing startup 3D Group in funding a CSIRO research project into manufacturing the material, which has a number of potential applications.

The study found two potentially scalable manufacturing techniques that might be used to produce graphene in high volumes and low costs, and a potential development process for graphene inks to be used in 3D printing.

In July, Business News reported that the 2014 financial year was a strong one for WA’s graphite miners, with a surge in graphite demand and significant discoveries buoying interest among the market.

Venture partner 3D Group is also generating some interest, announcing a backdoor listing through Sydney-based Oz Brewing.

Kibaran executive director Andrew Spinks said the company would be in further negotiations with the CSIRO for development of the technology.

Kibaran was up 12.5 per cent to 22.5 cents per share at the close.
