Joondalup council backs $65m hospital plan

The state government’s plan to build a new $65 million mental health hub in Perth’s northern suburbs looks set to get the green light next week, after receiving the endorsement of the City of Joondalup council.
The development application, lodged by Subiaco-based architectural firm Silver Thomas Hanley on behalf of the state government, features a two-storey mental health unit with 102 beds spread across units for both youth and adults, internal courtyards, communal spaces, dining, therapy and activity spaces.
The new unit, which is slated for a 13.3-hectare section of land at the northern section of the campus, will replace the existing single-storey mental health unit at the site and is designed to address the current shortage of beds.
The Shenton Avenue development forms part of the state government’s $256 million Joondalup Health Campus expansion, which includes a new operating theatre, an enhanced emergency department, a laboratory, a behavioural assessment clinic and a multi-storey car park.
The expansion is also designed to enhance the hospital's capacity to manage patients with infectious diseases, including COVID-19.
The City of Joondalup has recommended the Metro Outer Joint Development Assessment Panel approve the proposal, which it said conformed with local government planning regulations and was in keeping with the design of the existing campus.
The panel is expected to make a final decision on the proposal when it meets next Thursday, September 23.
