The Town of Port Hedland has appointed JAXON Construction for the first stage of upgrades at Port Hedland International Airport.

The refurbishment works will triple the size of the departures lounge, with an integrated cafe and bar, as well as upgrade the restroom facilities in the arrivals and departures lounges.

Port Hedland Mayor Kelly Howlett said the works would improve passenger flow within the terminal.

JAXON general manager commercial Mark Kepplinger said the company had been working in Port Hedland for more than 30 years, with projects in the Pilbara town making up a large part of its strategic plan.

“The Port Hedland airport upgrade also provides some great diversity of work and development opportunities for our staff," he said.

Construction of the first stage is expected to be complete by September.

The works are part of a five-year, $70.5 million redevelopment strategy for the Port Hedland airport, with a long-term vision set to be presented to council later this month.

Once complete, the new terminals will be able to accommodate around 700,000 passengers per year.

Port Hedland Airport currently accommodates around 70 flights per week, with daily flights to Perth and weekly connections to Brisbane, Bali and Melbourne.
