Hotels scrub up for business

GETTING it right the first time with fast, friendly and efficient service seems to be the key to a keeping Australian business travellers happy.

Research commissioned by Business Review Weekly identified the top 23 hotels in Australian capital cities according to a survey of chief executive officers from Australia’s 150 largest businesses.

In Perth, the Duxton, the Hyatt and the Parmelia Hilton were included on the list, with the Duxton achieving the highest ranking.

Duxton Hotel general manager Jerry Crump says inclusion in the rankings shows the hotel is able to provide a top class level of service for business travellers.

“It’s really pleasing for us because it’s a genuine recognition that we offer the products and service (business) people want,” Mr Crump said.

“Convenience is a big thing (for business travellers) and you have to make sure every contact is as friendly and positive as possible.”

Business clients make up about 16 per cent of the total volume of clients at the hotel, however they are some of the Duxton’s biggest spending clients.

“Basically (that’s) because they’re spending company money so they’re not keeping an eye on the pennies so much,” Mr Crump said.

The luxury hotel market in Perth has suffered a downturn, with a post-Olympic slump in tourists and a soft economy combining to keep occupancy rates low.

However, Mr Crump said things had picked up in the second half of the year, although rates were still very competitive.

Hyatt general manager Robert Dawson

said the biggest issue for business travellers was maximising their time in Perth.

“The thing about the corporate market is people are really time poor and the issue is making their time count,” he said.

Business people are cutting down on the length of their stays and the focus for a hotel like the Hyatt is to provide a fast, efficient service, rather than a list of added extras the business traveller will never use, Mr Dawson said.
