OPTUS and other Internet providers will now join Telstra in providing high-speed broadband access for many WA Internet and data network users.
The wholly owned subsidiary of Cable and Wireless Optus, XYZed, last week established a DSL (digital subscriber line) broadband service through a number of Perth exchanges that will reach the majority of Perth’s large businesses.
DSL makes it possible to provide high-speed data services over established copper cabling that can be up to 150 times faster than a standard modem connection, and 70 times faster than ISDN.
And other than an initial connection fee there is no other work needed because the technology uses existing copper telephone cables without interfering with their primary application for voice and fax services.
So a business subscriber can have a connection 24 hours a day but still have the phone lines operating for voice and fax. It also caters for technologies such as video on demand, e-commerce, and multi-media.
The monthly connection fee varies depending on the speed the subscriber wants.
With current dial-up modem access the highest speed is 56k, but with DSL a subscriber can select 218k, 514k, or even two megabyte.
XYZed specialises in developing a dedicated national high-speed access in competition with Telstra for a slice of the projected $1.5 billion industry.
The service will enable business to combine voice, fax, data, video, more efficiently into a combined service as well as catering for ATM networks, branch offices, Internet and many other connections where a continuous connection is needed for business.
The technology will be sold to governments, corporations, and second-tier Internet providers as well as Optus.
The exchanges selected Australia-wide will give Optus access to about 75 per cent of the business community.
This week it rolled out the service to 11 WA exchanges – Wellington, Pier, Victoria Park, Tuart Hill, Maylands, Cannington, Ascot, Fremantle, Mt Hawthorn, Subiaco and Bulwer.
“Our DSL network has been built to provide a business-grade, high-speed broadband access,” XYZed managing director Stephen Wilks said.
“We offer the guaranteed band width and security that large businesses need for mission-critical operations.
“Our Perth network offers connectivity that is dramatically more cost-effective than alternative high-speed options like leased lines and ISDN,” he said.
