Georgiou wins $24m Main Roads contract

Georgiou Group has been awarded a design and construction contract to upgrade a section of Karel Avenue to a dual carriageway to ease congestion around the Jandakot industrial area.

Under the $24 million worth of works, Georgiou will be responsible for widening Karel Avenue to a four lane dual carriageway between Farrington Road and Berrigan Drive.

This will include widening the Karel Avenue bridge over Roe Highway.

It will also extend the Karel Avenue bridge across the nearby freight railway line to accommodate Public Transport Authority of WA clearance envelopes for the planned Thornlie-Cockburn Link project, as part of Metronet.

The scope of the project was extended early this year after funding contributions were made by City of Cockburn and Jandakot Airport Holdings, the private owner of the airport and the surrounding industrial estate.

Georgiou beat out one other submission to obtain the contract, after submissions closed in July last year.

75 per cent of the contract is allocated to highway and road construction services, and the remaining 25 per cent to traffic engineering, according to the government tenders web site.
