Fremantle is fighting back

FREMANTLE City Council and the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce are linking arms to promote and develop a co-ordinated promotional campaign for the city.

An organisation known as the Fremantle Promotion and Marketing Centre will be formed under the umbrella of the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce.

The city is considering funding the program to a maximum of $140,000 for the 2000-01 year in

its forthcoming budget process.

The organisation will have a mandate to co-ordinate the promotional campaigns of the Chamber, the Fremantle Tourism Association and the Retail Steering Committee.

Fremantle Chamber of Commerce president Doug Kerr said the centre’s primary objective would be the focus of Fremantle as a premier place in which to do business, visit, shop and live.

The Centre is to have its own management board with represent-ation from each of the interest groups including the Mayor and chief executive of the city.

Strategic plans to achieve objectives over one, two and five year periods will be prepared and submitted to the city council for inclusion in the budget for 2000-03.

Mayor Richard Utting said: “Fremantle has great heritage, tourist and community activities to offer but it also must have a strong and efficient economic base.

“I am pleased to recognise that this new partnership with the

business groups will enable the Council to better direct its efforts in assisting the forward development and expansion of leading edge commerce, retailing, tourism and education within the region of Fremantle.”

A press release issued by the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce said the funding from the city council should “be seen as an economic dividend arising from the differential rating structure in Fremantle where the commercial and industrial properties pay a higher level of rating each year above the residential assessment.”

Mr Kerr said the Centre would provide new opportunities and

challenges for the business community.

The Chamber and city council have shown before their willingness to work together to boost the image of Fremantle.

On 16 December last year Mr Utting helped launch Fremantle means Business – an initiative of the Chamber that seeks to promote the port city.
