Land Minister Brendon Grylls has called for expressions of interest from potential redevelopment partners to be part of the revitalisation of the disused Knutsford industrial site near Fremantle, that would create 450 dwellings across 11 hectares.

Mr Grylls said LandCorp was keen to hear from parties interested in transforming the former Fremantle site into a cutting edge urban precinct.

"We're looking for a partner to work closely with us in redeveloping the site into high quality housing to enhance the already distinct character of the surrounding residential area," he said.

Bounded by Stevens Reserve and Swanbourne, Amherst and Blinco streets, it is expected that the first stage of the Knutsford project, which already had subdivision approval, would comprise 26 lots (including four group housing sites) and commence development in late 2010.

Mr Grylls said the project would feature a mix of densities, housing types and styles, new parks and amenity for the local community.

"We're looking at making this site an integral part of the Fremantle community," he said.

Further stages would yield in excess of 400 dwellings, with the appointed private sector partner to work with LandCorp in finalising a structure plan for submission to the City of Fremantle.

The initial focus of the redevelopment will be on the revitalisation of LandCorp's current and future landholdings, which cover more than 11 hectares.

The total development bounded by Stevens Reserve and Booyeembara Park, which included a number of private land holdings, would yield more than 1,000 dwellings across a five to 10 year period, incorporating about 20 hectares of land.

Mr Grylls said LandCorp had already begun engaging with the Fremantle community, ensuring a high level of consultation on the redevelopment from the beginning.

Expressions of Interes close on February 4, 2010.
