About Wi-Fi 6 and 6E

Wi-Fi 6 and 6E (IEEE 802.11ax) are the latest generations of Wi-Fi technology, designed to provide faster and more efficient wireless networking especially in highly-populated Wi-Fi environments. Wi-Fi 6 provides:

1.   Increased speed: maximum theoretical speed of 9.6 Gbps, nearly twice as fast as WiFi 5.

2.   Improved efficiency: Wi-Fi 6 uses a technology called Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) to allow multiple devices to communicate with the router simultaneously, making the network more efficient and reducing latency. It works by dividing the available bandwidth into smaller subcarriers, which can be assigned to different devices on the network, allowing the router to communicate with multiple devices at the same time, reducing latency and improving overall network efficiency.

3.   Better performance in crowded environments: WiFi 6 uses advanced techniques such as transmit beamforming and spatial multiplexing to improve performance in crowded environments with many devices.

4.   Lower power consumption: WiFi 6 devices use less power than previous Wifi protocols by allowing WiFi 6 devices to negotiate when and how often they will wake up to send or receive data, which is  beneficial for devices with limited battery life, such as smartphones and laptops.

5.   Enhanced security: Wi-Fi 6 enhances security through use of updated encryption protocols including support for SAE.

Wi-Fi 6E (announced in 2020) refers to an extension of the Wi-Fi 6 standard that includes additional spectrum in the 6 GHz band, providing even more WiFi bandwidth. WiFi 6E was approved for use in Australia in the first half of 2022.
