Devwest Group and Activ Foundation have proposed to build a neighbourhood centre in Maida Vale, estimated to cost $23.5 million.

The proposed development on 332 Kalamunda Road, Maida Vale, comprises a Woolworths shopping centre, various tenancies, a BWS liquor store, a gym, a medical centre and 247 parking bays.

The development application, prepared by town planner element, has been lodged with the state government’s Significant Development Assessment Pathway.

Disability services provider Activ Foundation is the freehold landowner of the 1.81-hectare Maida Vale site.

The proposed neighbourhood centre aligned with the City of Kalamunda’s activity centre strategy that identified a need for the development for the area.

“The proposed Woolworths-anchored shopping centre has been thoughtfully designed to positively contribute to the Maida Vale locality and provide an exciting new community village with a diversity of goods and services being provided across a multi-level design,” the application reads.

“The architectural response has balanced the contemporary demands of supermarket experiences, whilst ensuring the built form of the neighbourhood centre is respectful to the semi-rural aesthetic of the area and is providing a strong sense of place and identity that is synonymous with the Maida Vale locality.”

The proposed development has a $23.5 million price tag and is out for public comment through the SDAU website.

However, the proposed development does have inconsistencies with the city’s planning framework.

The application said despite the inconsistencies, the site could accommodate the size of the development.

“There is a clear need for this development to happen now, and this should not be held up any longer because of this concern,” it reads.
