Decision on Skyworks due in June

The City of Perth has deferred until next month any decision on whether to go ahead with three major events, following a recommendation by the city’s administration to cancel scheduled events due to uncertainty caused by COVID-19.

In an announcement released this morning, the city’s commissioners requested that a report be put together outlining the financial and health risks associated with the Christmas Nativity, New Year’s Eve and Skyworks events set to take place in 2020 and 2021.

“These are three events that have been taking place for many, many years and therefore require in my view a greater depth of analysis and consideration than would be afforded other matters within the COVID-19 Economic Rebound Strategy,” chair commissioner Andrew Hammond said.

That decision comes after an announcement on Monday that the city’s administration had recommended against proceeding with the three events.

In the announcement, the city cited the continued public health risk of large gatherings as well as onerous lead times as reasons for the administration’s recommendation.

A decision on whether these three events will go ahead in 2021 and 2022 will be determined by the City of Perth’s new council, upon its election and commencement in October.
