Curtin climbs, UWA slips in latest rankings

Curtin University has continued its slow improvement while The University of Western Australia's standing has dropped in the latest QS World University Rankings.

QS is one of three major league tables for the higher education sector globally, alongside Times Higher Education and the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

Its methodology weights research output, employability and intake of international students in assigning rankings to each university.

UWA was once again the highest ranked university from WA to appear on the list, finishing in 92^nd place, with Curtin University the next highest ranked university at 217th place.

Murdoch University and Edith Cowan University placed in the 571^st-580^th and 651^st-700^th bracket, respectively.

The University of Notre Dame Australia did not receive a ranking on QS’s list.

While UWA was the only university in the state to appear in the list’s top 100, its ranking this year represents a drop of six places from 2020, when it finished in 86^th place.

Curtin University’s ranking meanwhile showed an improvement on last year’s result, when it finished in 230th place, as well as a dramatic shift from 2017 when it finished in 306^th place.

UWA’s ranking has modestly improved in that time, finishing in 102^nd place four years ago.

QS’s results come after the Centre for World University Rankings published its rankings earlier this week, showing UWA as the highest ranked institution in the state at 151^st place.

Curtin finished in 361^st place, Murdoch in 858^th, ECU in 1061^st and The University of Notre Dame in 1789^th place.
