Those expecting Premier Richard Court to shy away from his ‘pet projects’ in the face of media pressure will be disappointed.
The Premier explained his vision for Fremantle to a packed house at the 126th annual general meeting of the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce. Central to his plans is the proposed maritime museum on the harbour.
Mr Court said that while developing the area was important, it must not threaten Fremantle port’s commercial activities.
“Everything we do has to fit in with Fremantle as a working port,” he said.
“Fremantle is going to continue to grow. It will remain a significant centre. The maritime museum will be the catalyst for other future developments.”
Mr Court also praised the efforts of the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce and the local council.
“It is a credit to both the chamber and the local council to be able to move with the times while still maintaining Fremantle’s character.
America’s Cup 1983 winner Australia II will be the centrepiece in the show case of WA’s maritime history.
Mr Court said Australia II was a very significant yacht in designing terms because of the technology and innovation adopted and thus deserved to be recognised.
“Whether you like Alan Bond or not...he put together a team and pulled off a major engineering feat,” he said.
