Contractors shortlisted for $43m Mandurah bridge

Locally-based contractor Georgiou Group has been shortlisted alongside two international construction conglomerates, Lend Lease Engineering and the OHL/York joint venture, to replace the historic Mandurah Traffic Bridge.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder announced the shortlist today, with the scope of works to comprise a new four-lane bridge to replace the existing two-lane timber bridge.

A preferred proponent to build the new bridge, as well as demolish the existing bridge, will be named by the middle of the year, with construction expected to be complete by the end of this year.

The state government will provide $40 million for the upgrade, while the City of Mandurah will pitch in $3 million.

A shared-use path will also be incorporated into the bridge design to allow for pedestrians and cyclists.

More than 24,000 vehicles per day traverse the bridge, which was built in 1953 and reinforced in 1987.

“Detailed engineering investigations show that the existing 62-year-old bridge is near the end of its operating life, and that a replacement bridge will provide for increased traffic capacity,” Mr Nalder said.

The OHL/York joint venture is a collaboration between South Australia’s York Civil and Spain-headquartered OHL Group.
