PUBLIC comment is sought on a new report examining the effects of the trawl fishery on pink snapper stocks in Denham Sound, Shark Bay.
The report is the outcome of a two-year study by the Department of Fisheries’ Research Division that assessed the relative impact trawling has on juvenile snapper and, ultimately, adult snapper stock in the Denham Sound area.
The comment period will conclude on November 28.
Fisheries Minister Kim Chance said he would set up a working group of key stakeholders to consider the public submissions and examine the broader issues of managing the inner Shark Bay snapper stock sustainability.
It is envisaged the working group will provide advice on possible management responses in time for the start of the 2004 Shark Bay Prawn Managed Fishery season.
