Celebrating the Moulin Rouge all night

Tuesday, 19 June, 2001 - 22:00
THE hospitality and entertainment industry’s annual gala Nocturnal Ball will take place at Metropolis Perth on Monday, June 25.

In recognition of Baz Luhrmann’s successful film, organisers (The Cabaret Owners Association) are dressing the club in the style of the Moulin Rouge, including five-metre puppets, bright costumes, and a drag show all adding to the glitzy theme.

Ticket prices have been slashed this year to just $30 and will ensure the night attracts large numbers.

The event is black tie or Moulin Rouge theme dress and doors open at 8pm.

Placing yourself on a popular café strip means you’ve got to be pretty good at what you do.

One such business looking to impress breakfast and lunch patrons is Perth’s newest café, Odyssey, under the guidance of Warren Milner.

Utilising the services of Catherine Brent-White, who established Subi’s popular Dome coffee shop, the café is fitted with terracotta tiles and limestone walls, providing a warm Mediterranean ambience.

Proprietor of the café, Turkan Altintas, has chosen a “Mid-East meets west” style of food that will complement the traditional favourites of panini rolls, gourmet sandwiches, pastas and salads.

The café also has a variety of snacks to cure those mid morning and afternoon nibbling tendencies.

Odyssey opens at 7.30am, with Segafredo coffee steaming and choices of either croissants, omelettes, or other breakfast treats, making the thought of ducking into Odyssey before work a tempting one.

The café is open Monday to Friday until 4pm and is located at 379 Hay Street in Perth.

Bibendum, the Colonnade’s sleek and sophisticated café, bar and restaurant has enjoyed resounding success with its acclaimed long Friday lunch.

And why not? The idea of knocking off, enjoying a sensational meal and then heading across to the bar for drinks sounds like one of the best ways to spend your Friday afternoon.

The long lunch is one of those great client-liaison ideas, offering plenty of time to discuss the finer details of business over some fine food, while the bar provides the perfect place to unwind and really get to know the people you’re in business with.

Long lunches start from 12pm and, according to Bibendum PR and marketing coordinator Lisa Smith, people should plan to tie up those loose ends before heading down to the restaurant where they can relax and enjoy their food in the knowledge that the work day is over.

Trying to enjoy Bibendum’s food really isn’t too hard a task, with a delectable and flawless menu having been created by the acclaimed chefs.

Covering everything from Duck Liver Parfait to Capellini with mussels to Paella, the menu is designed to keep you tied up in culinary bliss for quite some time. From starters to entrees to mains to side orders, no matter what your appetite, the Bibendum can cater to it.

Whether you’re peckish or starving, Bibendum on a Friday is the place the head to, and let’s not forget, once the formality of eating is over and the day just about done, the B Bar truly is an attractive option.
