Carmen Lawrence quits politics

AUSTRALIA’S first female premier, Carmen Lawrence, last week announced her retirement from political life, effective at the next federal election. The Labor member for Fremantle confirmed she would retire at the next election to take up an academic position at the University of Western Australia. She will leave political life after 21 years in state and federal parliament, including two years as a federal minister.
