Brian Burke's daughter to run for ALP state presidency

The daughter of former West Australian premier Brian Burke is one of a number of Labor hopefuls tipped to be seeking to become the party's next state president.

This morning the Australian newspaper reportedly confirmed Sarah Burke, a 32-year-old Perth lawyer, plans to run for the position almost two decades after her father quit the WA premiership for an ambassadorship in Ireland.

Two weeks ago, ABC radio reported speculation that Ms Burke may run for the role, along with a list of other contenders that read like a Labor who's who - five people, dominated by women - who were tipped to be running for the state Labor presidency.

Apart from Ms Burke, ABC reporter Peter Kennedy reported Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union secretary Jock Ferguson, Shelly Archer (partner of CFMEU boss Kevin Reynolds), Sharryn Jackson (former federal member for Hasluck) and Sally Talbot (MLC for the South West) are all tipped to be in the running for the role from which Michele Roberts will be retiring.

Ms Burke is also understood to be president of the Scarborough/Karrinyup ALP sub-branch and along with Ms Archer was believed to have also run for the federal Labor presidency. Ms Jackson held Hasluck for one term until she lost to Stuart Henry.
