Alan Bourke has been elected as the new president of the Real Estate Institute of Western Australia, following the retirement of Rob Druitt.

Mr Druitt served as president for three years and became a well known face to the West Australian public as he
commented on the decline and rise of the state's property market following the boom of 2006 - 2007.

Mr Bourke, from Alan Bourke Real Estate in South Perth, now takes up the reins for a two year term.

"I'm really looking forward to this challenging role and to representing the Institute and its members," Mr Bourke said.

Mr Bourke said the WA property market appeared to be in a state of modest recovery and that West Australians had a keen interest in housing.

"I am conscious of how very important it is for REIWA to comment accurately and honestly on the state of the market, and also to ensure that REIWA agents and property managers are reputable and professional.

"As President, I want to ensure that the high benchmarks set by my predecessor are both maintained and improved upon," Mr Bourke said.

Mr Bourke said he felt strongly about real estate professionals being properly trained, and wanted to see the State and Federal Governments do more to address affordable housing.

Mr David Airey, who served as Deputy President under Rob Druitt, declined a nomination for the position of REIWA President due to his ongoing commitments as President of the Real Estate Institute of Australia, and heavy interstate travel commitments.

However, Mr Airey was re-elected to maintain his deputy role under Mr Bourke.
