Belmont-based ASX-listed GenusPlus Group has been awarded a $90 million contract for work on Synergy’s Kwinana Battery stage two project.

The award covers civil and electrical balance of plant works, including the install and commissioning of almost 300 battery container units and 72 inverters on what will be the biggest grid-connected battery in the state.

The contract follows GenusPlus’ work on stage one of the Kwinana Battery and is expected to create 160 jobs during the peak of construction ahead of a late 2024 completion date.

Stage two of the project has four times the storage capacity of the recently completed stage one, delivering 200 megawatts of power with 800 megawatt hours of energy storage.

Synergy chief executive David Fyfe said GenusPlus’ success on stage one – which is now providing stability to the South West Interconnected System energy grid – made it a strong choice for stage two.

“The Synergy team welcomes the opportunity to again partner with GenusPlus to deliver another important project in WA’s decarbonisation journey,” he said.

GenusPlus managing director David Riches said the company welcomed the opportunity to expand its working relationship with Synergy at Kwinana.

The company’s release to the ASX pointed out the strength of the state’s decarbonisation strategy, including its commitment to retire state-owned coal power stations by 2030.

The state government allocated $625 million for the second stage of the Kwinana battery project as part of its energy transformation strategy.

GenusPlus has had a successful year on the contract front, having won $28 million of work from NBN Co for planning, design and construction of federal broadband infrastructure in July.

In May, the firm won $30 million worth of work from iron ore miner Fortescue Metals Group for infrastructure works at its solar and gas Pilbara generation project.

GenusPlus shares closed up 0.45 per cent on Tuesday.
