Coastal and marine environmental consultancy BMT has been awarded $13.4 million by the Department of Transport to consult on coastal dredging.

BMT has been contracted to provide consultancy services for the department's dredging program for coastal facilities and other sites, as part of an annual dredging program.

The program provides maintenance dredging, sand bypassing and coastal management at more than 30 sites along the Western Australian coast.

The contract begins on September 1, and is due to finish in August 2024, with a possible extension to August 2026.

BMT won the work ahead of three other submissions.

In a statement, the Department of Transport said the contract would secure 32 jobs, including the creation of 12 new positions.

Department of Transport maritime executive director Steve Jenkins said a year-long multi-stage procurement process had resulted in a four-year contract with options to extend up to two years for dredging design, environmental management and project management services.

“Having worked previously with DoT for around 10 years under different contracts, BMT has proven experience in this specialised field and the long-term contract will support the continued development of local expertise with the creation of opportunities for engineers, engineering technologists, and marine environment scientists,” Mr Jenkins said.
