The state's Planning Commission has endorsed the structure plan for the redevelopment of the Cockburn coast, which will attract about 10,000 new residents to the area.

The redevelopment of a unique coastal area south of Fremantle is a step closer with the Western Australian Planning Commission's endorsement of the Cockburn Coast District Structure Plan.

Planning Minister John Day said the endorsement was a significant milestone that involved extensive consultation with local community and stakeholder groups. It is anticipated that 4,850 new dwellings will be created for this development, attracting approximately 10,000 new residents to the area.

"The endorsement represents an important step in the planning process for the sustainable redevelopment of this land," Mr Day said.

"The structure plan offers an exciting future for the Cockburn coast - a future focused on a redeveloped power station and infill site; a transit system linked to Fremantle; vibrant coastal nodes; and improved connections to the local environment.

"The structure plan is aimed at transforming under-utilised or vacant industrial land into a vibrant setting for families, business owners and people who will visit the region for its wonderful parkland and coastal environment."

The Minister said a key feature was a focus on sustainability performance that included ambitious energy and water reduction targets and 20 per cent affordable housing. It also provided a variety of housing types and styles, including apartments, townhouses and smaller dwellings.

"The many stakeholders who contributed to the structure plan are to be commended for taking a forward-thinking approach," Mr Day said.

"This includes local government authorities, landowners and the community, who have been essential in pulling together a framework to create a more ecologically sensitive housing and commercial area.

"The State Government will continue to liaise with the cities of Cockburn and Fremantle to progress implementation of the structure plan, with further opportunities for public involvement at the local structure planning and scheme amendment stages.

"We are also progressing with a proposed amendment to the Metropolitan Region Scheme to rezone land in relation to this project."
