Amcom Telecommunications has announced a $9 million deal to provide cloud computing services for the University of Western Australia.

Under the agreement, Amcom will securely host more than 400 terabytes of storage at its Perth-based data centres for three years for UWA, with the deal including options for extending.

UWA's director of information management, Mary Davies, said the partnership would be vital to meet the future storage needs for the university's students, academics and researchers.

Amcom's push into the growing cloud computing sector was fast-tracked in February, when it announced a strategic partnership with data backup firm BlueFire Corporation.

Last month Amcom sold off its 23 per cent stake in internet service provider iiNet, in order to raise the working capital to enter cloud computing.

Amcom chief executive Clive Stein said being chosen by UWA to provide cloud services was validation of the company's new service-driven strategy.

At 9:53AM (WST) Amcom's stock had gained 2.9 per cent, to trade at 35.5 cents.
