Accreditation for Notre Dame school

Tuesday, 30 November, 2004 - 21:00

THE University of Notre Dame has received full accreditation of its new School of Medicine from the Australian Medical Council.

Due to begin teaching in February 2005, the postgraduate school will have an initial intake of 80 students, and has places for government scholarships, government-supported HECS placements and full fee-paying places.

The school will be run from a restored heritage building in Henry Street Fremantle, which is on a long-term lease from the Fremantle City Council.

More than 250 medical professionals have indicated a willingness to teach students of the new school of medicine, with clinical teaching particularly in the areas of general practice, aged care, private hospitals and outer metropolitan health services.

The school aims to have students train in areas of need, and in their first year of study, students will be billeted in communities in the State’s central Wheatbelt.

Students have been selected on the basis of having completed a prior degree, demonstration of scientific knowledge and ability in the GAMSAT exam, and an interview process.
