WA Cricket has awarded a building contract to ADCO Constructions over works on the WACA Ground Improvement project, which is expected to exceed $160 million.

The contract with ADCO covers the demolition of existing structures and construction of the Western Australian Cricket Association project, including the aquatic facility.

The WACA Ground Improvement Project is being delivered as part of the $1.66 billion Perth City Deal.

WA Cricket has secured $163.4 million for the improvement project, with WA Cricket Foundation to raise the remaining funds.

ADCO managing director Neil Harding said the company was excited to be selected as the builder of choice for the WACA Ground Improvement Project.

“The WACA Ground is iconic across the world, and we are very proud to be part of the Ground’s future, ensuring the long and distinguished history of cricket continues for the future generation of Western Australians and visitors alike,” Harding said.

“Community has been central to the ADCO story for over 50 years, and we look forward to working with WA Cricket and continuing the strong relationship we have built with Perth’s local community during construction of this project.”

Despite works starting at the East Perth cricket grounds, the project had been hit with delays.

In its announcement, WA Cricket said several milestones had been reached including oval lengthening, lighting upgrades, and the demolition of outdated stands, training centre and maintenance sheds.

“Further demolition and site preparation works are currently underway with the next major phase of the build due to commence in February 2024 when piling and aquatic facility excavation works commence,” the announcement said.

WA Cricket chief executive Christina Matthews said the WACA Ground Improvement Project continued to progress.

“When you come see a game of cricket at the WACA Ground this summer, you will notice the amount of work we are undertaking as part of the WACA Ground Improvement Project,” she said.

“We are transforming the WACA Ground into a year-round community and sporting hub and are thrilled to have ADCO on board to lead us through the next phase of the build.

“The WACA Ground will be a world-class inclusive community and sporting facility for all Western Australians to enjoy and we look forward to monitoring the progress of the build as it continues to move forward.”

The WACA Ground Improvement Project is expected to be completed by late 2025.
