A Shared Journey of Success

In this edition of WA Business News we’re proud to introduce the 2008 class of 40under40 winners.

They are a remarkable group and their achievements at such a relatively young age provide an inspiring example of what is possible when there is focus and commitment. It hasn’t been an easy road for them all, some had to overcome major obstacles, but what shines through with all the winners in this program is their sense of optimism, self belief and steely determination to succeed.

The judges are privileged to get a glimpse into the journeys of these individuals. They share with us their most significant achievements, their biggest setbacks and challenges, their entrepreneurial and innovative attributes, the values and behaviours that have guided them, and finally, what they have contributed to the community.

The 40under40 program was set up seven years ago to bring recognition to the next generation of the state’s leaders. After seven years, the flow of quality applications continues. The supply of young talent in WA seems inexhaustible.

Like the applicants, the judges come from very diverse backgrounds. This has served the program well and ensured there is no bias towards any particular industry sector.

Each of the judges invested a considerable amount of their personal time and energy. We are indebted to them all.

Choosing the First Amongst Equals was a particularly daunting task. The top four candidates – Dr Michelle Ammerer, Mark Blayney, Timothy Marney and Suzannah Vaughan – are amazing individuals.

The selection process, which started with written applications, also included interviews by the judging panel for the top four.

This week's special report provides more extensive profiles of these four special individuals.

The diversity of these four shows the uniqueness of the 40under40 program. One is a specialist surgeon, another is a top public servant, a third is a self-made entrepreneur, and finally, a sea captain.

This program recognises and encourages leadership and excellence in all areas of human endeavour

The unique and memorable venues used for the 40under40 awards night adds to the sense of occasion. This year we were fortunate enough to be able to use the semi-completed Century City development in the CBD.

Century City will be home to a brand new, high-quality retail centre, as well as the first new office tower to be completed in Perth for several years.

We are proud to be able to introduce it for the first time to the attendees at the gala event. Our sincere thanks to the management of this development who allowed the 800 guests on to what is still a construction site

Our thanks also to all those who put forward nominations. The field was amazingly strong and with the winning number set at 40 there are many who missed out on recognition this time around.

We encourage you all to consider nominating for next year’s program. During the seven years of 40under40, we have had many winners who succeeded on their second or third attempt.

To grow as a society and as a business community we all need role models and mentors.

The 40under40 class of 2008 is at an age where they can make a huge impact and influence many others by their leadership and example.

We hope that by shining the spotlight on this amazing group of people their success will inspire and motivate others.
