Congestion at Port Hedland Inner Habour is expected to ease mid next year as construction work officially starts on the new, $225 million public access berth at Utah Point.
The berth will have a capacity of some 18 million tonnes per annum and will be able to accommodate for Panamax and small Cape size vessels of up to 120,000 dead weight tonnes.
Canning Vale-based Marine and Civil Construction were awarded the wharf construction contract.
New iron ore producer Atlas Iron today welcomed the start of construction works as the company prepares to start exports from April at a rate of 3mtpa.
Dredging of the 300 metre-long, 60m-wide and 14m-deep berth pocket at Utah Point was completed in May 2007 and approval for the development was received in October 2007.
Foundation customers Atlas, Aurox Resources, BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Consolidated Minerals, HiTec Energy and Process Minerals International contributed $105 million towards the public-private partnership development.
