IAN Williams, a clinical preparedness officer with the South Metropolitan Health Service, is the recipient of the $15,000 Bali Nursing Fellowship.

The fellowship was created in commemoration of the 2002 Bali bombings.

Under the fellowship a nurse or nurses will undertake a national or international study tour to examine new innovations and best practice in the area of disaster management.

The fellowship is awarded based on applicants’ submissions and selection undertaken by a panel of experts.

In his current role, Mr Williams is responsible for developing the disaster management strategy for the south metropolitan area.

The two-week study tour he plans to undertake involves visiting Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan – countries that have all suffered major disasters including earthquakes, plane crashes and, most recently, SARS.

Last year the inaugural Bali fellowship was won by Barry Morley and Kate Simpson, two nurses who were at the scene of the Bali bombings.
