The West Australian Symphony Orchestra will put on two special performances to accompany Peter Jackson's movie Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring on the big screen on June 21 and 22.

It will be the second time WASO has performed a movie score in recent months, with the orchestra playing the original score of Klaus Badelt from the Disney film Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl in April.

The Pirates of the Caribbean concert attracted more than 2,100 audience members and received positive reviews.

The Lord of the Rings concert, which will feature Howard Shore's epic score, will take place in the Riverside Theatre in the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, with the film screened on a six by 14.5-metre screen above the stage.

Swiss-born conductor Ludwig Wicki will lead the orchestra, having previously conducted live performances of the scores to all three of The Lord of the Rings films.

The St George's Cathedral Choristers and the WASO Chorus will perform alongside the main orchestra in order to bring to life the choral passages in Mr Shore's work.
