WA unis win with ARC grants

Western Australian universities have secured nearly $10 million in the recent round of Commonwealth Australian Research Council funding.  Of this, the University of Western Australia secured $4.5 million, which is backed by $5.7 million in industry contributions.

The funding is for 15 separate research projects ranging from greenhouse gas emissions to clinical science.

Murdoch University secured $2.7 million and has gained $4 million in industry contributions.

Curtin University secured $1.6 million and $2.8 million in industry contributions, while Edith Cowan University was allocated $746,903, and $736,340 in industry contributions.

Murdoch University director of research and development Paul D’Sylva said Murdoch’s performance in the ARC Linkage Grants was 47 per cent above the national university average.

Murdoch University’s ARC Linkage grants included $1.73 million for Murdoch’s agricultural and environment-based projects, $730,000 for coastal habitat remediation and the conservation of endangered animals, and $223,000 for a project aimed at cleaning up air pollution in the Perth CBD.
