CYCLONE Olivia hit the Pilbara region this week 10 years ago with category four winds, charting a destructive path through the small mining town of Pannawonica, damaging buildings and causing power outages for several days. Robe River mining operations were closed indefinitely, as were those of Hamersley Iron at Tom Price, Paraburdoo and Marandoo. BHP mines at Mt Whaleback and Yandi were also closed. Offshore at Woodside Petroleum’s North West Shelf oil and gas project, the company had to unhook its floating production and storage vessels and move them out of the area, although gas production facilities remain in operation.
