WA falls behind in new car sales

New car sales in Western Australia have continued to lag behind the national trend, with sales down 8.4 per cent in August.

A total of 8,371 new cars was sold in WA last month, while national sales rose 2.9 per cent, to 90,705, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

The result has brought WA’s year-to-date figure down 8.9 per cent to 70,952 sales, making it the worst-performing state in the country.

Toyota was again the top performer by volume of new cars sold in WA, however it was down 15 per cent in August to 1,504.

Hyundai came in second with 1,143 new cars sold last month, however that was 9.9 per cent worse than the previous corresponding period.

Holden and Ford were also lower this month, with Holden down 30.6 per cent to 651 sales and Ford down 20.7 per cent to 544 sales.

Only one Lamborghini was sold in August, however the Italian sportscar maker has had an astounding rebound from last year’s performance, with sales up 350 per cent in the year-to-date to nine new cars sold.

Ferrari also sold one car in August, but it is beating its year-to-date result by 45.5 per cent.

Alfa Romeo sales have been hammered this year, with sales down 62.2 per cent, from 238 sales to just 90, while Porsche sales have surged by 41.7 per cent to 255 new cars sold so far this year.
