WA car sales show first improvement in years

New car sales in Western Australia grew on a monthly basis for the first time in four years in May, but the upswing still falls well short of the slide in sales for the year to date

Just more than 8,100 new cars were sold in WA last month, up 2.8 per cent on the May 2016 result according to the latest figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

However, sales were still down 7.6 per cent in the year to date.

More than 102,900 new cars were sold nationally in May, up 6.4 per cent for the month but down 0.9 per cent for the year so far.

In WA, Toyota sales were up 8.7 per cent with 1,863 new cars sold, while Hyundai sold the second-most new vehicles with 768, down 7.5 per cent for the month.

Ford sales were up 9.9 per cent with 680 new cars sold, while Holden sales were down 7.5 per cent with 542 new sales.

Honda sales were up 33 per cent with 278 new cars sold.

Ferrari sold two new vehicles in May, on par for its monthly performance but down 37.5 per cent in the year-to-date, while Lamborghini sold one new car, down 66 per cent for the month and 33 per cent for the year to May.

Porsche sales were levelled for the month with 27 new cars sold.

Audi sales were down 2 per cent with 100 new cars sold, while BMW sales fell 36.4 per cent with 98 new sales.
