Former WA solicitor general Robert Meadows has died, aged 81.

Mr Meadows was appointed solicitor general by the Court Government in 1995 and served in the role until his retirement in 2013.

Immediately prior to his appointment, he was the senior partner and chairman of the Perth office of Freehill Hollingdale and Page.

Mr Meadows was admitted to legal practice in 1966 after completing his degree at the University of Western Australia. He joined the firm of Muir and Williams, working first as an articled clerk and later as a solicitor, barrister and partner.

He was elected president of the Law Society of Western Australia in 1986 and also edited its journal, "Brief", for seven years. In 1992, Mr Meadows became president of the Law Council of Australia.

He was also a vice president of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association and in 1998 was appointed a King's counsel.

Law Society of WA president Rebecca Lee said Mr Meadows, who was made a life member of the society in 1998, was always a pleasure to deal with.

Mr Meadows was also a delegate to the United Nations’ Working Group on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and represented Australia on the group which determined Australia-Indonesia boundary delimitation.
