Uranium panel to advise government

AN independent panel has been assembled by the state government to help craft a regulatory framework for the state’s rapidly emerging uranium mining industry.

The panel will comprise 10 experts from the Australian Centre for Geomechanics, a joint venture of The University of Western Australia, Curtin University and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

Mines and Petroleum Minister Norman Moore said the panel would provide advice to the Department of Mines and Petroleum.

The independent experts panel also provide the DMP with third-party ‘peer review’ and assessment of uranium mining proposals during the assessment stage of the development.

At least five major mines are planned over the next five years, including BHP Billiton’s massive Yeelirrie project near Wiluna, not far from where Toro Energy and Mega Uranium are respectively planning their Lake Way and Lake Maitland mines.

Energy & Minerals Australia is also planning the Mulga Rock mine near Kalgoorlie while Canada’s Cameco is evaluating the Kintyre project in the Pilbara.
