THE University of Western Australia has become a foundation member of a new international network of seven high-quality universities, known as the Matiriki Network of Universities.

The network draws parallels with other prestigious groups of universities, such as the Group of 8 in Australia, of which UWA is already a member, the Ivy League in America, or the Russell Group in the UK.

The Matiriki Network emphasises the importance of living on campus as a means to enrich the experience of student life and learning.

The group includes some of the oldest institutions in their respective countries. They are: Dartmouth College (New Hampshire, US, established 1769); Durham University (England, established 1832); Eberhard Karls University of Tubingen (Germany, established 1477); Queen’s University (Canada, established 1841) University of Otago (New Zealand, established 1869) and Uppsala University (Sweden, established 1477).

The network will offer invaluable benefits to UWA students, who have already discussed a program of activities including exchange programs for academics, students and administrative staff, research networks, visiting fellowships, joint postgraduate programs and collaboration on major international projects, as well as social responsibility projects, cultural and sporting activities.
