Trott, Mallard and Brown join RFDS WA board

Rio Tinto iron ore chief executive Simon Trott, Arjaway managing director Dwayne Mallard and Cannings Purple national director Karen Brown have been appointed to the Royal Flying Doctor Service Western Operations board.

The three people join current RFDS WA board members comprising of Sam Walsh, Fiona Wood, Angus Turner, Robert Slocombe, Saul Harben, Tim Shackleton, John Van Der Wielen and Joanne Farrell.

Mr Trott was appointed his current role in 2021, after more than 20 years at Rio Tinto.

He has also served as managing director of the salt, uranium and borates division, overseeing the mining giant’s operations in Australia, Namibia and the United States.

Rio Tinto is RFDS’ principal corporate partner.

Mr Walsh, who is the current RFDS WA board chair, also held roles in Rio Tinto, formerly being the company's London-based chief executive and its iron ore chief executive based in Perth.

Mr Mallard is a Wajarri-Nanda, Yamatji man and is the first Indigenous board director to join the RFDS in WA.

He founded a social enterprise, Arjaway, which aims to create "social alchemy" by enhancing individual, family and social functions.

Mr Mallard served as a chairperson for his Native Title the Wajarri Yamatji Claim, the Wajarri Yamatji Aboriginal Corporation and chaired the Yamatji Region COVID-19 Emergency Response Taskforce in 2020.

His experience as a negotiator includes being the lead negotiator in the Square Kilometre Array Radio Astronomy Indigenous Land Use Agreement.

Ms Brown is a non-executive chair at Cannings Purple, a director for the Pinnacle Foundation and EDGE Employment solutions and an advisory board member for the Salvation Army.

Her career in media and politics includes being a former deputy editor at The West Australian, WA editor of The Australian, a chief of staff to the leader of the Australian Government in the senate and to the federal minister for tertiary education, skills, science and research.

She is also on the committee for Hawaiian Ride for Youth.
