The Department of Housing expects to save $20 million over the next 3 years by outsourcing repairs and maintenance.

Transfield Services has won a $200 million contract to manage maintenance and repairs.

Transfield will service public housing in the Great Southern, Midwest, and Pilbara for the next three years.

It expects to employ about 600 local subcontractors.

In statement the Department said the other companies to win contracts are Programmes Facilities Management, which will service the South-West and Lake Maintenance, which will service the Goldfields, Kimberley and Wheatbelt.

The Department of Housing had historically contracted out its maintenance services to sub-contractors.

Under the old maintenance model the Department managed up to 700 individual contracts across the different trades and regions of WA. Now the head contractor becomes the single point of contact for all repairs and maintenance issues.

Transfield CEO, Peter Goode, said, "This new contract brings the total of government-owned housing premises that will be maintained by Transfield Services to 100,000 and highlights our continued organic growth in the sector."

Transfield will use its Reconciliation Action Plan to engage Indigenous employees and provide employment opportunities across the awarded zones.

The company has been repairing and maintaining public housing in New South Wales since 2002.
