Top spindoctors recognised

RILEY Mathewson stole the show at the recent Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA) State Awards for Excellence.

The awards were open to WA individuals or organisations practising public relations in the private, public and non-profit sectors.

For the second successive year, Riley Mathewson won the Comprehensive Communication Program Award for a program undertaken with Western Power, “Beating the Bug”.

In the midst of Millennium Bug paranoia, the company undertook the issues management-based communications plan to reassure the WA community that Western Power had no Y2K concerns.

The same campaign also won the Issues/Crisis Communic-ation Category.

Riley Mathewson also collected a highly commended prize in the same category for its Response to Toxic Algal Bloom Crisis in the Swan/Canning Rivers campaign undertaken with The Water and River Commission.

The company picked up another highly commended prize in the Government Communication category for its Worker’s Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 1999 campaign undertaken with Aged and Community Services WA.

The Community Communication category was won by the Ministry of Justice for its Work Camps campaign, while RHK Public Relations picked up minor prizes in the same category.

The Special Events category was won by Mills Wilson Media Consultants for its 1999 Training Awards campaign.

Edith Cowan University’s Annaliese Doesburg won the WW Mitchell Student of the Year Award.

State award winners will compete at a national level in the Golden Target Awards to be held in Melbourne later this year.
