Timber bar to take shape in Freo

 ICS Australia will start construction on a bar made from locally grown timber later this week, the latest project by hospitality entrepreneur Miles Hull.  

The Jetty Bar and Eats, which will be located at 21 Beach Street in East Fremantle, will be made almost entirely out of sustainably sourced timber.

Building services group ICS Australia said the entire timber framework of the bar would be erected in just one day, using off-site manufactured timber from Wesbeam, a Western Australia-based manufacturer of laminated veneer lumber (LVL).

Wesbeam state manager Tim Mapstone said using prefabricated LVL timber portal frames for the build also supported passive design, resulting in the building requiring very little energy to heat or cool the space.   

ICS Australia managing director Craig Peterson said the project site was previously home to a similar timber-style building.

“The bar will float right between the iconic Fremantle traffic and Stirling bridges so the choice to pay homage to the area and use timber for this project made complete sense,” he said.

“We’ve worked with Wesbeam for years, and their sustainably managed, locally sourced timber is one of the most environmentally friendly building materials available.”

Mr Peterson said the timber structure would come first, followed by the cladding and internal fit-out.

“On completion, the project will have used 18 cubic metres of sustainable timber which will result in a carbon offset of 9.8 tonnes making it one of WA’s most sustainably designed and built venues,” he said.

“Raising the bar structure in one day will be no mean feat, but once the community see the timber build sitting on the water the vision for the bar will come to life.

“For us, this project really highlights the benefits of a passive building whilst using sustainable materials.”

The 120-person capacity bar was designed by spaceagency architect Michael Patroni, with Fremantle-based Kate Archibald Design Office to complete the interior fitout.

ICS Australia has recently completed several other hospitality projects including Quarter Acre Tavern, Johnny Fox’s and Lynott’s Lounge.

Mr Hull, a former Little Creatures general manager, also recently revealed his plans to establish a tavern within Blackburne’s One Subiaco apartment development.
